A New Milestone In Understanding Object Oriented Programming

Have you ever had something that you understood what it was and thought you understood how it worked, but couldn’t quite wrap your mind around how to use it affectively. This has been the case for me for some time with regards to inheritance in regards to development. Because of my background I develop in VB.Net. Up until just the other night I thought I had got a pretty good feel for OOP. Then I saw something and realized I had been missing a major part of it all along.

I am using DevExpress (DX) tools for my development including their eXpress Persistent Objects (XPO) ORM product. At home, in the evenings, I am in need of an application to track info about a collection I have. So I thought that this would be a good opportunity to play with the trial version of their eXpressApp Framework (XAF) that comes with my Enterprise subscription.

My background is from the Database side of things. I love dealing with relational database models and laying everything out. So over the past couple of years as I have been working on our in house app at work, this is the thinking I had in my mind when developing the XPO model for that app. I played with inheritance enough, but now I realize that I didn’t understand it enough and that is why I dropped it. But after looking at how things work in XAF I have a whole new understanding and respect for the usefulness of inheritance.

The thing that really drove it home was who an object could be stored in two tables in the database. The base object properties in the base object table and the inherited object’s additional properties in a separate table in the database. I just wasn’t getting it before and couldn’t understand the true usefulness. But after looking at who XAF worked, things just clicked. I definitely have to rethink a lot of my existing in house system, although, much of it can’t be changed, there may be some that can and it will be very useful.

I still have a long way to go in terms of fully understanding XAF, but playing around with it and watching the videos about it on the DevExpress web site has made one big difference for me. As I go through a make my little home use app, I will learn more.

Someone gets it right on Palin

John Tantillo is, I think, the only one that gets it right in his article on FOX News.com - “Palin 1, Pundits 0”. The political commentators wouldn’t recognize morality or convictions if it hit them in the face. She is resigning for the right reasons instead of the political reasons. We need a few more public figures like this.

Testing Live Writer and DNN

Most of my sites use DNN including this one. I have been swamped at work and home and haven’t been logging on much lately so haven’t been posting. I use Live Writer at work for my internal status updates blog on our SharePoint, and wanted to see if I could use it for DNN. A quick search and sure enough, it will work. This is my first attempt at a post with Live Writer. If it works, maybe I will actually post more often.

More Links and Note to McCain

Haven't had much time to do anything other than read a few articles and my email. Here are a couple more links that I thought were good reading in regards to the financial crap that is going on.

Can't beleive it, but there was actually something worthwhile on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/29/miron.bailout/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

This one is very good and has a LOT of info: http://www.reason.com/news/show/129158.html

Now onto McCain. I get the email blasts from the McCain campaign and on Tuesday (9/30), I got one with the subject of "It's time for action" about the "Bail Out" and why it is so "Necessary". I tend to dissagree and so even though I seriously doubt that it will be read, I hit the reply button and typed the following and sent it off.

I support you because you had the forsight to choose a conservative running mate. Now have have the courage to let the free market work like it is supposed to. DO NOT SUPPORT a bail out of ANY nature!!!!

FreddieMac and FannieMae MUST go away. They are a FAILED social experiment and anything that is done to prop them up will be worse in the long run. I little bit of pain now is MUCH better that socialism for the long term.

An additional note. Please let Sarah Palin be herself. She is not what we want when a bunch of washington insiders and consultants fill her up with drival!!! We want someone to FIGHT for our side. NOT to capitulate to the left.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA">Best Regards,
