Don't get me wrong I love the church that I attend and the congregation is absolutely wonderful. I am excited about raising our daughter in the church, to learn and grow in Christ. But, it is interesting and often times very frustrating how political beliefs play a role.
I saw a bumper sticker stating "Christ is a Liberal" on a vehicle of a church member. My question is "How could you know?" My contention is that Christ is Christ and he is not liberal or conservative. Although, my beliefs really want to lead me to say "Christ is a Conservative!"
So why do I say that? Well, there are many reasons, but one of the prevailing issues that lead me in this direction is the saying "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime." Every liberal program and idea that I am aware of that has been tried is really just give entitlements. They do not force someone to learn to be independent. My personal belief, and one that I know true conservative believe (in contrast to RINOs (Republicans in name only), is that giving a hand out can be very harmful while giving a hand up is the way to approach life. And, those that just want a hand out may need to suffer a bit in order to learn they need to accept the hand up rather than the hand out.
A coupe of years ago, I randomly opened my Gideon's bible. I happened to open it to 2 Thessalonians 3 (http://www.guidedbiblestudies.com/53_003.htm). As I read, I was struck by what I read. It really pushed this belief that I have home. Paul basically said, stay away from the slackers. I contrast this with welfare which has really turned into a hand out rather than a hand up. I truly believe that the government should not be involved in this and that it should be a church and charitable function. If people need a hand up, I am more than happy to help if I am able to. But don't ask me for a hand out.
As a member of a church and a follower of Christ, I believe it is my responsibility to give. Giving is good for the heart and soul and if it is given appropriately, it can be turned into a lot of help hand ups.
There is so much to say on this subject I could go on and on. As with everyone who follows Christ my learning will never end.
Peace in Christ
